It starts with something so small…
A tiny piece of skin beside your nail.
You pull it.
It stings.
Then your body’s defence system goes to work.
Redness.
Swelling.
Pain.
Sometimes even infection.
What looks like a minor injury can become a painful condition called paronychia, especially if bacteria enter through the broken skin.
🩹 Help protect your fingers by:
✋ Avoiding picking or biting the skin around your nails
🧼 Keeping the area clean and dry
💧 Moisturising dry skin to reduce hangnails
⚠️ Seeking medical advice if redness spreads, pus develops, pain becomes severe, or the swelling doesn’t improve
🇬🇧 If you’re concerned:
🏥 Speak to your GP or local pharmacist
📞 NHS 111 for advice
🚨 Seek urgent medical attention if the infection spreads rapidly, you develop a fever, or you have severe swelling, especially if you have diabetes or a weakened immune system.
Sometimes the smallest injuries deserve the biggest attention.
