The father, M2704, was left to die of dehydration before his body was placed beside a highway, according to authorities. The son, m2994, was shot in the spine and beaten over the head, and his body was moved onto public lands where cattle graze. The killings violate the Endangered Species Act and the Lacey Act, which can lead to fines of up to $50,000 or imprisonment for up to one year, or both. In 2018, rancher Craig Thiessen pleaded guilty to trapping a 10-month-old Mexican gray wolf on public lands and beating the wolf with a shovel. After outrage from the public, the US Forest Service revoked his public lands grazing permit. 20 Mexican gray wolves died in New Mexico in 2025.
