psychologists who study divorce say the fight itself rarely predicts the outcome. what predicts it is which of four behaviors show up, and whether anyone tries to stop the spiral.
criticism attacks character instead of behavior. contempt (eye-rolls, sarcasm, mockery) is the single strongest predictor of divorce in the research. defensiveness meets a complaint with a counter-complaint. stonewalling isn't a choice, it's a nervous system past its threshold.
the one thing that changes the outcome is the repair attempt. a joke, a touch, "can we start over?" — any small effort to de-escalate is what actually determines whether a fight becomes a rupture.
securely attached couples don't fight less. they notice the spiral sooner and repair faster, before contempt gets the last word. that's not personality. it's practice.
