Diving deep into the history behind the American jewelry industry for the nation’s 250th birthday – Part 1 💎
In the early 1910’s, jewelers were having trouble finding insurance policies because they were considered to be a high risk. Jewelry stores were prone to fires due to the chemical they used to clean watches. A few members of the Wisconsin Retail Jewelers Association led a charge to start their own insurance company specifically for jewelers. On March 12th, 1913, a charter was granted to the group of jewelers, led by A.W. Anderson. This would be the official birth of what would become Jewelers Mutual.
This was not only significant for our history, but for the jewelry industry as a whole. Jewelers in Wisconsin now had a way to protect their businesses assets. And it wasn’t long before Jewelers Mutual Limited Fire Insurance Company of Wisconsin started writing policies outside of Wisconsin.
