Invented by an army doctor in 1856, it was called Chlorodyne — opium, chloroform and cannabis, sold over the counter with no prescription needed, as a cure for absolutely everything. It made its inventor a fortune, and quietly made thousands of ordinary people dependent on it. Some rival brands were even worse, laced with prussic acid or nitroglycerin to undercut the price.
