The South Carolina Republican Party is suing the South Carolina State Election Commission over the state's open primaries. South Carolina currently has open primaries, allowing any voter to cast a ballot in the party primary of their choice without having to register as a member of that political party. In their lawsuit, filed in federal court, the state GOP alleges that allowing non party members to vote in their primary is a violation of their constitutional rights. The lawsuit comes after previous efforts to close South Carolina's primaries failed in state legislature. "The simple truth is that you should not be able to choose a party's nominees without being a member of that party, and that's what our lawsuit is about," said party chairman Drew McKissick in a statement.
