Slow walker. Speed snacker. Don’t stop it now! Gopher tortoises may be known for taking life at a leisurely pace, but when it comes to mealtime, they don’t mess around. As herbivores, they spend much of their day grazing on nature’s salad bar. Their menu includes grasses, wildflowers, leaves, stems, some fruits when available, and even cacti. So if you spot a gopher tortoise rapidly eating, don’t worry…it hasn’t suddenly developed a need for speed, it’s just taking advantage of a good meal opportunity. (What?! The buffet is closing in five minutes?) Video: A gopher tortoise munches excitedly on small plants near a picnic table at Kingsley Plantation timucuannps
