D’Angelo’s music was more than a sound; it was a feeling. For @deasia_paige, his albums marked every era of love, growth and faith. She writes:
“D’Angelo was Black music personified. The neo-soul pioneer, who died Oct. 14, occupied a heavy place in my heart and a heavier impact on the pantheon of legendary musicians. D’Angelo’s sound encompassed pleasure and power. He was my favorite artist of all time, possessing a tenderness that spoke directly to my soul at times when I needed love the most. ‘Brown Sugar’ was the lovey-dovey courtship. ‘Voodoo’ was the pivotal funk and faith on a blissful wedding day. ‘Black Messiah’ was the rapturous rock honeymoon. D’Angelo and his timeless soundscapes will be greatly missed. I talked with my colleague and fellow ‘It’s UATL’ co-host Nedra Rhone about D’Angelo, an artist whose undeniable appreciation for Black music history shaped my love for music.”
