Take a minute. ⏱️
By the early fifties Porsche knew that tuned production cars would no longer win races. So they built one just for racing and nothing else. This is 550-01, the first of them. It won the very first time out, at the Nürburgring, in the rain, against Borgward and EMW, fighting carburetion trouble the whole way. At Le Mans it ran nose to tail with its sister car for all 24 hours, the two finishing at the same gap they started. Then it crossed an ocean. Guatemala, the Carrera Panamericana in Mexico, and a win at the 1000 Kilometers of Buenos Aires. Three continents in a single season. The car that told the world Porsche was serious.
