✈️ #FlashbackFriday to the early days of aviation in Venice! Pictured is aviator Captain George W. Haldeman in front of his airplane at Albee Field, located west of the railroad tracks and south of Venice Avenue. A pioneering pilot, Haldeman helped put Venice on the aviation map. In 1927, he made one of the city’s earliest airplane visits, delivering fresh strawberries by air to the Hotel Venice and demonstrating the possibilities of air travel for the young community. Later that year, he gained international recognition as a copilot alongside famed aviator Ruth Elder during her historic attempt at a transatlantic flight.🍓 As Venice continues to celebrate our Centennial, it’s fascinating to look back at the people and moments that helped shape our city’s history, on the ground and in the skies.
