"He just needs more conditioning." A parent told us that about her 12-year-old soccer player. He'd start every match strong... then fade in the second half. So she had him running extra three nights a week. When we tested him, conditioning wasn't the problem. His top-end speed was. Because his top speed was too low, the speed he needed during a match was almost his maximum. Every sprint took more out of him than it should have. The solution wasn't more conditioning. It was improving his speed and power. A few weeks later, he was finishing matches as strong as he started them. Her response?
