Fixel Institute researchers developed and tested a new mathematical model that can extract more detailed brain signal information from the recordings already collected by deep brain stimulation (DBS) devices. This is significant because it could help clinicians make more informed programming decisions using devices patients already have.
It could also support the next generation of adaptive DBS, in which stimulation automatically adjusts based on a patient's brain activity. Better estimates of where brain signals originate could make these adaptive systems more accurate and personalized.
