With her celebrated canna lily paintings, Georgia O’Keeffe unlocked one of her greatest artist innovations: turning a familiar flower into an immersive experience. ‘Red Canna’ from 1924–25 is on view at #SothebysNewYork in ‘American Views: People & Places,’ which showcases the art and objects that define the nation’s visual culture. In 1918, Georgia O’Keeffe began spending her summers at Lake George, New York, where she encountered an abundance of red canna lilies. Captivated by their billowing petals and vivid color, she first painted the flowers in watercolor before developing the subject into a series of 16 oil paintings over the following decade. Here, O’Keeffe magnifies the flower beyond its natural scale, cropping the petals so that they extend beyond the edges of the canvas.
