Today we’re honoring 250 years of American independence with a closer look at the historic objects that define the country’s founding ideals. This is a rare, signed copy of the Declaration of Independence on view at #SothebysNewYork, open to the public this holiday weekend.   In 1823, Secretary of State John Quincy Adams commissioned the first official copies of the Declaration of Independence. Replicating the document took renowned engraver William J. Stone nearly three years, and the final version is as close to an exact copy of the original manuscript as was possible at that time.   Of the 200 prints Stone made of his copperplate engraving, the copy at the Breuer building is only one that includes Adams’ signature.
