Despite its name, the Hand of God is not a giant hand in space. It is a pulsar wind nebula called MSH 15-52, formed when a massive star exploded in a supernova. The rapidly spinning pulsar PSR B1509-58 releases high energy particles that light up surrounding gas in X rays. From Earth's perspective, this glowing cloud happens to resemble a hand.
