It was a bit of payback for the Bulldogs, who had lost the 2003 title game to the Tigers by nearly the same score. Georgia jumped ahead early and never let go. D. J. Shockley, the senior quarterback who had spent much of his career backing up David Greene, threw touchdown passes of 45 and 29 yards to Sean Bailey, part of a first-quarter surge that staked the Bulldogs to a 14- 0 lead. A blocked punt by Bryan McClendon helped set up another Georgia score, and the Bulldogs carried a commanding 21-to-7 advantage into halftime.
