July 7, 1990
On this date in 1990, Sting defeated Ric Flair at The Great American Bash in Baltimore to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, the first world title of his career. Returning from a knee injury, the 31-year-old countered Flair’s Figure Four attempt into a small package for the pin, ending a reign of more than 14 months. The Dudes with Attitudes surrounded the ring to keep the Four Horsemen out, and Ole Anderson spent the match handcuffed to El Gigante.
Also, Big Van Vader made his WCW debut, and Mark Callous, the future Undertaker, challenged Lex Luger for the United States Championship.
