July 6, 1998
On this date in 1998, Goldberg defeated “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan on WCW Monday Nitro at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship.
Hogan required the undefeated Goldberg to first beat Scott Hall earlier in the night, and Goldberg won both matches, finishing the champion with the spear and the Jackhammer in front of his hometown crowd.
The show drew 41,412 fans, the largest crowd in WCW history, with around 30,000 tickets sold before the main event was even announced. The title change aired on free television rather than pay-per-view, a decision made to win the Monday night ratings battle, and it remains one of the most famous moments of the Monday Night Wars.
