In old folklore, it was never called imagination. It was a warning. They say children and the old ones stand closest to the veil, because their spirits have not yet hardened, or have already begun to loosen. They notice the cold spots that bloom where no draft should be, the hush that falls before a presence is named, the way a room can turn heavy when something unseen has entered. In the old stories, these are the ones who hear the whisper first and feel the watching before any eye can find it. So it was warned when a child stares into the dark and does not blink, or an elder speaks to empty corners with no fear in their voice, best mind your prayers for they may be looking at what the rest of us were never meant to see.
