July 9th is National Fashion Day! We can’t keep up with the latest fashion of today but we will share some fashion of the past. Speaking of the past, the uniform Howard, Jared, and Channey wear in our print shop at the Sacramento History Museum is largely based off of what you would see a printer wear in a printing office in the late 1800s. As part of the Lewis Winter Collection, we have a lot of fashionable items that Winter made at his wood and photo engraving business at 627 J Street in Sacramento. His business operated from 1888 to 1910. For today, Jared letterpress printed two electrotypes (copies of a woodcuts) depicting two large hats showing 1890s fashion. Winter likely designed this cut for advertising purposes in newspapers and magazines.
