Look up early (or stay up late) this week. The Lyrid meteor shower is set to peak over Boston in the early morning hours of April 22, with as many as 18 meteors per hour possible under dark, clear skies. The best time to watch is between 2am and dawn, especially from around 3am to 5am, after the moon sets and the sky gets darker. For the best view, head away from downtown light pollution and find an open, dark spot with a clear view of the sky. Places like Blue Hills Reservation or quieter coastal and suburban areas will give you a much better shot. The meteors will appear to come from near the constellation Lyra in the northeast, but they can streak across any part of the sky. No telescope needed.
