Boston just made publishing history. For the first time since its founding in 1872, The Boston Globe did not print a newspaper. A record-setting blizzard dumped up to 32 inches of snow near the Globe’s Taunton printing plant, making it unsafe for staff to get there. Even during the legendary 1978 blizzard, the Globe managed to print a limited run. Not this time. Print subscribers will receive Tuesday’s paper on Wednesday, but it’s a reminder of how much the media world has changed. A recent Pew survey found just 7% of U.S. adults regularly get news from print, compared to 56% who use digital devices. 32 inches of snow. 153 years of history. One skipped print day.
