3 reasons why you shouldn’t assume people with mental health issues are just doing things for “attention”.
1. You will overlook a severe cry for help and lose empathy with just how much said individual is struggling. The language we use to describe or perceive people ultimately becomes how we approach and respond. We as a society have to break out of negatively viewing people who struggle with mental health as problematic, attention seeking and or dangerous.
2. As it pertains to mental health issues, some behaviors can be impulsive and destructive, hence drawing “attention”. The persons intent may not be to get attention, but even if it grabs yours, help the person, not ignore and dismiss.
3. Mental health issues are complex and the person enduring it may honestly be fighting for their life. Even if a behavior is done to get your attention, there is still a need that the person is trying to have met. Offer support, guidance and help as best you can.
