This report originally aired on July 11, 1990 The planned expansion of a ‘stupid’ golf course in the town of Oka ignited one of the most significant Indigenous rights conflicts in modern Canadian history which saw vehicles being used as barricades, gun battles and a police officer being killed. The conflict stemmed from the Mohawk people of Kanesatake considering the land the course would be built on as part of their traditional territory.
