I said “she’s fine once she’s there” for eight months. Because that’s what every expert kept telling me. My gut said something else the whole time. I’m university mental health trained - I had every reason to trust what I was seeing. I let them talk me out of it anyway, because it felt safer to defer to the people “handling it” than to trust myself. By the time it was obvious she wasn’t okay, we’d lost time we didn’t need to lose. That’s the part I wish someone had told me sooner: your gut isn’t the thing getting in the way. Even with training behind it, it’s often the only thing that’s been right all along. We got there in the end. She went from missing 100+ days at the worst of it to starting at her first-choice university this year.
