More than 2,700 people may have died in exceptional May and June heatwaves in England and Wales, according to new research. The figure, from a team at Imperial College London, the Met Office and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, is based on what's known about the dangers of extreme heat. Researchers say climate change added three to four degrees to maximum temperatures, causing four in 10 deaths from the recent heatwaves in the UK.
