Usually found in warm lakes, hot springs and abandoned pools, the amoeba enters the body via the nostrils when people jump into water - and quickly begins to attack brain tissue.
The organism is now being detected in places where it was once rarely seen, which has renewed concerns among researchers.
Jordan, who was 11 at the time, died from a brain infection caused by the organism, called Naegleria fowleri.
