China has just shown a very different path to reusable rockets.
On the first flight of the Long March 10B, the rocket’s first stage didn’t attempt a vertical powered landing like SpaceX’s Falcon boosters. Instead, it returned to a recovery ship at sea, where a wire‑based catching system secured it.
If this approach proves reliable, it could remove the need for heavy landing legs and reduce the fuel reserved for touchdown, improving payload efficiency.
This marks a clear contrast with SpaceX’s method, which relies on propulsive landings and has already achieved hundreds of successful recoveries. China’s demonstration signals that more than one engineering solution to rocket reuse is now emerging.
The Long March 10 family is expected to play a central role in China’s plan to land astronauts on the Moon before 2030, making reusable launch systems strategically important.
