Options trading research: if a SPY strangle hits a loss, what is the probability it recovers before expiration? This study isolates recovery odds across 45, 30, 20, and 10 DTE strangles at four loss thresholds. At a 0.5x loss, all durations recovered at least 59% of the time. At 1x the odds start splitting. At 2x, a 45 DTE strangle still has a 47% shot, essentially a coin flip, but a 10 DTE strangle barely has time left. At 3x the numbers get ugly fast. The key finding: time remaining is the most important variable in whether a loser recovers, which justifies tighter stop losses on shorter dated positions.
