Unused Canada Day fireworks were unexpectedly set off over Ottawa Thursday night, catching many residents off guard.
The City says the fireworks were leftover shells from the cancelled Canada Day show on July 1, which was called off due to severe storms.
According to Coun. Jeff Leiper, Canadian Heritage determined it was safer to launch the unexploded fireworks than transport or dismantle them, and the disposal was carried out in coordination with Ottawa Bluesfest.
The display began around 11 p.m. and lasted roughly 20 minutes, but many residents said they received no advance notice, leading to confusion and concern across the city.
Several councillors, including Jeff Leiper and Ariel Troster, criticized the lack of communication, calling the late-night decision difficult to understand and unacceptable, especially after recent severe storms and with many people already feeling on edge.
