The I formation is when the net partner is positioned at the midpoint of the center service line in a crouching posture. This is to avoid obstructing the server’s view. Using this tactic of changing your court position creates an opportunity to dictate play by limiting the other team’s ability to take control of the point. The element of surprise by lining up in the center of the court, then splitting in opposite directions while the receiver is returning the serve can cause confusion for the returner. The net player can either switch cross court or go back to the regular position. Likewise for the server they would cover the open court. This is something that can hand signalled or spoken about before the point starts.
