He joined Rolls-Royce as a graduate apprentice in 1955, rose all the way to CEO and Chairman, and helped guide the company through one of the most important turnarounds in British engineering history. His legacy includes the Trent engine program, the post-1971 revival of Rolls-Royce plc, and even a role in securing the modern Rolls-Royce Motor Cars era at Goodwood.
