Marc Chagall was born on July 6, 1887, into a Hasidic Jewish family in Vitebsk, now Belarus, and became one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Throughout his career, Chagall drew heavily on Jewish life, folklore, and the Hebrew Bible. After fleeing Europe during the Second World War, he lived in the United States before settling in France, where he remained for the rest of his life. He created major public works, including stained-glass windows for synagogues and churches, as well as the celebrated ceiling of the Palais Garnier opera house in Paris.
