Venezuela’s acting president Delcy Rodriguez said the government has requested the release of Venezuelan gold held in London to help fund recovery efforts after two major earthquakes.
The Bank of England holds around 31 tonnes of Venezuela’s gold, worth around $4bn – but since 2018, Caracas has been banned from repatriating it.
Rodriguez said the gold belongs to the Venezuelan people and should be used to support rebuilding efforts following the disaster.
