Wildfires do not stop at jurisdictional boundaries. Responsibility for the state’s lands is shared among state, local, federal and tribal agencies. About half of California is land managed by the federal government, while CAL FIRE protects State Responsibility Areas and local agencies serve cities and other Local Responsibility Areas.
