Â
Heard before it’s seen, the Corncrake is a super secretive bird with an unmistakable call.
Â
Related to waterbirds like Moorhens and Coots, Corncrakes actually prefer to live on land instead of the water like their cousins.
Â
Spending most of its time hidden in tall grass or reedbeds, the males create a distinctive rasping call, which can be heard mainly at night, sometimes calling for hours on end.
Â
A red listed species, Corncrake numbers have fallen dramatically as farming and agricultural production have intensified.
Â
But by partnering with farmers and landowners, we’re working hard to ensure the future of this iconic and secretive bird.
