Sound on for this one! 🔊   Heard before it’s seen, the Corncrake is a super secretive bird with an unmistakable call.   Related to waterbirds like Moorhens and Coots, Corncrakes actually prefer to live on land instead of the water like their cousins.   Spending most of its time hidden in tall grass or reedbeds, the males create a distinctive rasping call, which can be heard mainly at night, sometimes calling for hours on end.   A red listed species, Corncrake numbers have fallen dramatically as farming and agricultural production have intensified.   But by partnering with farmers and landowners, we’re working hard to ensure the future of this iconic and secretive bird.   #corncrake #speciesspotlight #rspb
