When someone is experiencing a mental health crisis, the response they receive matters. Last year, across Los Angeles and Riverside Counties, Sycamores’ unarmed response programs provided in-person support to more than 5,900 individuals, offering calm, compassionate care designed to de-escalate situations without adding fear or trauma. These unarmed teams include licensed clinicians responding to acute mental health crises as well as peer-led outreach teams supporting individuals facing lower-risk behavioral health concerns. Together, they focus on stabilization, connection, and meeting immediate needs – from safety planning and transportation to food, hygiene, and access to shelter or health care. For people facing homelessness, extreme heat, or isolation, this kind of human-centered support can be life-saving.
