If you live in a home that was built before 1978, it is more likely to have lead-based paint. Lead-based paint was banned in 1978, but it is still present in millions of homes, normally under layers of newer paint. If the paint starts to crack, peel or chip, it can create lead dust and become a hazard. Keep all painted surfaces in excellent shape and clean up dust often with a wet cloth.
