Birth Defects Awareness Month is a time to learn more about conditions that can affect pregnancy, including congenital syphilis. Congenital syphilis occurs when a pregnant person has an untreated syphilis infection, but it is preventable with timely testing and treatment. Getting tested early in pregnancy-and again later if recommended-can greatly reduce the risk of complications for both you and your baby. Routine prenatal care plays an important role in staying healthy throughout pregnancy.
