Infant mortality is defined as the death of an infant before age one. On average, 320 infants die in Minnesota each year. Between 2019 and 2023, the top four causes of infant mortality were prematurity (31.0%), congenital anomalies (25.6%), other perinatal conditions (15.9%), and SUID/SIDS (13.2%.). Together, they accounted for three-fourths (85.7%) of all infant deaths in the state. All babies born in Minnesota deserve a healthy start in life and opportunities to survive, thrive, and develop to their fullest potential.
