Infant mortality is defined as the death of an infant before age one. On average, Minnesota loses 326 infants each year. Between 2018 and 2022, the top four causes of infant mortality were prematurity (31.8%), congenital anomalies (25.1%), other perinatal conditions (15.8%), and SUID/SIDS (11.7%.). Together, they accounted for three-fourths (84.4%) of all infant deaths in the state. All babies born in Minnesota deserve a healthy start in life and opportunities to survive, thrive, and develop to their fullest potential.
