Between 2017-2021, 83 babies were born in Minnesota with sickle cell disease and over 2,600 were born with sickle cell trait. Thanks to #NewbornScreening, all babies are tested and identified at birth and their primary care providers and families are notified to ensure every baby gets the care they need. Governor Walz proclaiming September as Sickle Cell Awareness Month highlights the continuing need to increase public knowledge and address the challenges experienced by the patients and their caregivers, families, and the communities impacted by sickle cell disease.
