In honor of World Storytelling Day, the @minnesota department of health #newbornscreening team would like to share the story of Everett. Before Everett's birth his mom, Korissa, knew very little about newborn screening. With the gentle recommendation and education from a nurse, Korissa agreed to have Everett screened. Everett was born without complication. But, five days later when Korissa received Everett's newborn screening results. The results were positive for a rare #geneticcondition, galactosemia. Babies with #galactosemia are unable to digest milk properly and the build up of byproduct can cause liver damage and even a coma. With this information, Everett's parents acted quickly and changed his diet. Today, Everett is happy and healthy! If not for the gentle persistence of the nurse, Korissa would have left the hospital without having Everett tested.
