Minnesota’s ready to head to the lake to cool down. Lakes could be home to a harmful amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, which causes a rare but serious brain infection and enters the body through the nose. The infection is rare, but you can still take simple steps to reduce your risk while swimming in warm freshwater this summer: keep your head above water, plug your nose or use nose clips.
