Senior editor John Pearley Huffman dove into the history of the Indy 500 and the creativity the race brought out from the various competing companies.   The first “Indianapolis Motor Speedway 500-Mile Sweepstakes” ran under the barest rules: The cars had to go at least 75 mph, have engines under 600 cubic inches, and weigh a minimum of 2300 pounds. With the bait of a $25,000 prize pool—more than twice what any previous race had paid—regulations were kept slight to attract participation from carmakers around the world.
