Why are self examinations important?
A mammogram by itself cannot always find breast cancer, especially in women with dense breasts, but when it is combined with your own exam, you have a much better chance of catching breast cancer before it can spread.
Here are some tips:
- Do a breast self-exam once a month to familiarize yourself with the way your breast normally look and feel.
- Examine yourself a week after your period ends, when your breasts are less tender and the glands are no longer swollen.
- Breasts can all feel different— it is important to know what your breasts feel like so that you know when something changes.
