On this day in 1989, Hardee’s and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the voluntary recall of approximately 2.8 million Ghostblasters, the battery-powered noisemakers distributed as part of the restaurant chain’s Ghostbusters II Kids Meal promotion.
The recall came after at least 15 reports of children swallowing the toys’ small button-cell batteries. While no serious injuries were reported, Hardee’s immediately removed the remaining Ghostblasters from its approximately 3,100 restaurants and offered customers a refund.
