Originally planned to be tattooed directly onto a life sized 3D model, the process took an unexpected turn when the material wouldn’t hold ink. Su’a then hand drew the entire Peʻa freehand in just 24 hours, carefully ensuring every pattern honored the integrity and cultural significance of Samoan tatau. The finished artwork was later used to create Maui’s tattoo skin for filming.
