On July 26th, we mark the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) – a landmark civil rights law. This pivotal date is why July is Disability Pride Month. The very first Disability Pride Day was held in Boston in July 1990, the same month the ADA was signed into law. This was no coincidence. It was a powerful, intentional act of collective joy and defiance, born from decades of relentless advocacy. People came together not only to celebrate their identity but also to underscore that the fight for rights and freedom was about pride in who they are, as much as it was about legislation.
