Glycine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brainstem and spinal cord, so it quiets neural activity instead of knocking out or sedating you.
It lowers your core body temperature by pulling heat out to your hands and feet, and that drop in core temp is one of the actual physiological triggers for sleep onset and deep slow-wave sleep (Bannai et al., 2012; Yamadera et al., 2007).
Chamomile works through a different but similar door. It’s rich in apigenin, which is a flavone that binds the same receptor site benzodiazepines target on your GABA-A receptors, nudging your nervous system toward calm (Viola et al., 1995).
Glycine is one of the few amino acids that tastes genuinely sweet, basically no calories, so you end up with a delicious tea that relaxes your nervous system within minutes.
